From a predicted 6 to a 9

Meet Darsh: Two 9s and an 8

Darsh used LitMarker to revise three GCSE subjects in 2026: Eduqas English Literature, AQA English Language and AQA History.

Before he started, Darsh reported predicted grades of 6 in English Literature, 5 in English Language and 7 in History. On results day he received a Grade 9 in English Literature, a Grade 9 in History and a Grade 8 in English Language.

That is three grades higher in Literature, three in Language and two in History.

The Problem: Practising Without Anyone to Mark It

Darsh knew what good revision looked like. The hard part was getting feedback on it:

There is lots of advice online but the best way to learn is to practise, and I couldn't ask my teachers for help during study leave.

The specific skill he found hardest is one every English student meets on the way to the top bands:

The main thing I really found difficult was how to apply my analysis and link it to other points and the overall question, which LitMarker helped me to do.

Linking each point back to the question is what separates a list of good observations from an argument. It is also hard to judge in your own writing without a mark.

A Normal Day in Study Leave

Darsh used LitMarker every other day at first, then every day as the exams got closer. His study-leave routine was steady:

I would practise poetry essays and set text essays for a few themes every day, and I would do history 20 mark essays every other day.

Practising by theme meant each essay revisited the same material from a new angle. Darsh noticed a second benefit:

This practise also helped me to remember my points and analysis clearly.

What Made the Difference

Asked which feature made the biggest difference, Darsh chose the marking itself:

The accurate marks and feedback... LitMarker was very similar to the feedback I saw on my real exam papers.

He also singled out the advice on improving each point:

The advice for improving points was so helpful too for improving my points to help me achieve the top grades.

Point-by-point advice turns a mark into a next step. Instead of rewriting a whole essay, you can take one point, apply the advice and see whether the next answer does it better.

The Results

  • English Literature (Eduqas): predicted 6, received Grade 9
  • English Language (AQA): predicted 5, received Grade 8
  • History (AQA): predicted 7, received Grade 9

Darsh's Advice to Students Starting Year 11

Darsh's advice to this year's Year 11s is simple:

It's absolutely a no brainer. The sooner you start using it the better, so you have longer to develop your habits and don't have to cram it in closer to the exams.
